NAS Initial Setup

Please refer to the below video for setting NAS initially. Link: First-time Synology NAS Installation & Setup Guide | Synology

NAS POC

Our task starts with creating a shared folder(s) in our DSM. Every shared folder can have different permissions (access/modification capabilities) for different users.

There are multiple ways we can access shared folders on Synology NAS within the local network, a few are mentioned below for instance:

  • Access Shared Folders from Network Drive

Choose Go > Connect to Server from the menu bar. Type the IP address or name (appended with .local) of the Synology NAS preceded by smb:// or afp:// in the Server Address field and click Connect. (e.g. smb://EricaWang.local or afp://192.168.0.2)

  • Access Files via FTP

If your Synology NAS is accessible over the Internet, you can use an FTP application to access the shared folders. Go to Control Panel > File Services > FTP to enable FTP service, allowing users to upload or download Synology NAS data via FTP.

  • Access Files via File Station

File Station is DSM's file management tool, allowing DSM users over the Internet to access the Synology NAS folders with their web browsers, or transfer files to another WebDAV/FTP server.

‘Share’ is our root shared folder.

Please refer Access Files on Your Synology NAS via Windows File Explorer

Synology NAS supports the following file-sharing protocols:

Windows: SMB/CIFS (My Network Places), FTP

Mac: SMB, FTP, AFP

Linux: SMB, FTP, NFS

Since it is a common protocol of Windows, Mac and Linux, SMB protol can be explored as development progresses further. But as Synology NAS already provides us with a FileStation API, we have used the FileStation API in our POC.

FileStation API

DSM provides us the option of expanding our applications based on its APIs, allowing our applications to interact with files in DSM via HTTP/HTTPS requests and responses.

After exploring and trying different configurations it was observed that for a given Resolution there is an ideal range of Bit Rate which gives a video of decent clarity.

Based on Increff Cloud warehousing operations, the below Camera is recommended(for better clarity):

Print App Version required for Video capturing

In order to start using the video-capturing feature, latest Print App version is required. Please download and use the latest version of the Print App (v8).

Once you have downloaded the appropriate printer application software for your system:

  1. Unzip the downloaded software.

  2. Please go through the README document contained inside the unzipped folder.

To Test if the Printer Setup is done

  1. Start apache-tomcat-8.5.20\bin\startup.bat

  2. Visit http://localhost:8080/print/

  3. Users should see a welcome page where the user can give a Test Print.

How to start the Print Application automatically?

The Startup folder in Windows contains a list of shortcuts for those applications that start when your Windows start.

The Current Users Startup folder in Windows 10 is located at:

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

These programs start up for the currently logged-in user only. To directly access this folder, open Run, type shell: startup, and hit Enter.

Add shortcuts to the startup.bat in this folder. Now, when the system is shut down and turned on again, the print application will start automatically.

Please refer this document for more details.

FAQs

  • Why do warehouses need NAS?

    • Warehouse internet generally don't have the bandwidth to upload recorded videos to the cloud. Hence it's important to save videos on the same network instead of the cloud.

  • Will warehouses use their existing NVE and camera or need to install a separate setup?

    • No, we don't have any integration with any NVR device.

  • What will be the bandwidth consumption for uploading the data?

    • Only local bandwidth will be required and not internet bandwidth. Actual bandwidth depends on the number of packing/return processing stations where cameras are there, the quality of video getting captured, and the duration of videos.

  • What kind of NVR access warehouses are required?

    • We don't support NVR .

  • How client data is secure and what kind of security layer is being used to control the data security.

    • We are only sending the video footage to NAS on the local IP. As long as NAS devices' IPs are secured everything is secure.
